I was a princess, long ago, when the summers were warm and light, and the winters had a far softer, sweeter touch than this grating, cutting cold that sears into the flesh and mind. I was, once, good and beautiful and served my father dutifully, for my mother was long gone, claimed by one illness or other. I lived by the book and by the court, smiling and curtsying, speaking of things with no particular import to myself or to the world in general.
